As Prince William marked his birthday last weekend (June 21), many royal watchers are still amused by a memorable moment involving Kate Middleton during a royal event last year.
Public appearances by the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony are rare and typically reserved for major events. These balcony gatherings allow the royals—often referred to as “the firm”—to greet and wave to crowds during national celebrations.
Prince William’s birthday doesn’t traditionally warrant a balcony appearance, but fans recently got their share of royal sightings during “Trooping the Colour”, held last weekend to celebrate King Charles’ official birthday.
Earlier this week, William attended Royal Ascot solo, as Kate decided not to join. She is reportedly being careful to balance her return to public duties.
However, it was a surprising comment made by the Princess of Wales during a key royal event in 2024 that caught the public’s attention—and it was all about William’s facial hair.
At the annual Remembrance Sunday ceremony in London, Kate stood on one of the palace balconies with Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.
According to body language expert Nicola Hickling, the two women were spotted sharing a light-hearted conversation about William’s beard.
Hickling, speaking to “The Sun”, said that Sophie asked Kate, “What, you like a beard?” to which Kate allegedly responded, “I find it quite rousing.”
The exchange continued with Sophie laughing, “You’re all better now,” prompting giggles from Kate as well.
It appears Kate wasn’t the only one who appreciated William’s bearded look, which he has continued into 2025.
Fans also voiced their approval online.

Still, it’s unlikely this year’s birthday celebration will top last year’s highlight: Prince William enjoying Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” concert at Wembley Arena with Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 10.
The trio even went backstage to meet the pop icon and her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce.
Though there may be no grand balcony appearance this weekend, last year’s unexpected and candid moments continue to keep royal fans entertained.
