I got home late one night, and Dad was waiting for me at the door.
Dad: “Where have you been?”
Me: “I was at my friend’s house.”
Dad gave me that look—the one that says, “Let’s see how good this story really is.”
Without saying another word, he grabbed his phone and called ten of my friends.
The first four immediately said,
“Yes, Uncle! He was here!”
I smiled.
“Perfect. My boys have my back.”
Then two more answered,
“Yeah, Uncle… he just left.”
I started feeling pretty confident.
Then three others said,
“He’s here, Uncle! He’s studying. Do you want me to put him on the phone?”
At this point, I was impressed.
My friends weren’t just loyal…
They were running a full-scale alibi operation.
Then the tenth friend answered.
And this genius decided to go above and beyond.
In his best impression of my voice, he said,
“Yes, Dad. Tell me, what happened?”
There was a long silence.
Dad slowly looked at me.
I looked at Dad.
Dad looked back at me.
Then he smiled and said,
“Son…”
“Next time, pick smarter friends.”
I realized I’d been defeated by my own witness list.
