The Mother Superior and the Heavy Safe
The Mother Superior of an old cathedral convent was famous for doing things exactly her way.
One morning, a moving company delivered a massive steel safe to her office. It was so heavy that two muscular movers struggled up three flights of stairs before finally setting it in the corner.
The Mother Superior stepped back, folded her arms, and studied it carefully.
“Oh dear,” she said. “Now that I can actually see it… I think it would look much better over by the window.”
The two moving men looked at each other, wiped the sweat from their foreheads, and groaned. They spent another ten minutes grunting, lifting, and pushing the heavy piece of steel across the room to the opposite wall.
Panting, one of them asked, “How’s that, Mother?”
She walked around it, tilted her head, and frowned.
“You know… I was right the first time. It really belongs back in the original corner.”
The moving men were furious, but out of respect for her habit, they didn’t say any bad words. They grabbed the safe, put all their strength into it, and dragged it back to the original corner
When they finally finished, the lead mover wiped his forehead and said,
“We don’t normally charge for blessings…but we definitely charge for moving safes twice.”
The Mother Superior smiled sweetly, opened her desk drawer, pulled out a small box of homemade butter cookies, and handed it to him. “Oh, my sons, the church is very poor, but I can give you these delicious cookies and my personal blessing.”
The mover looked at the cookies, then looked at his partner, and said to the Mother Superior, “Mother, we appreciate the cookies. But with all due respect, if your blessings were as heavy as that freaking safe, we’d be flying straight to heaven right now without needing an airplane!”
